There was a story told so long ago
A tale in a land so far away
They passed down a law
To the people of the land
That no crosses could be displayed

It was said that no religion could be worshipped
No songs to worship the Lord could be sung
So God appeared to a man
In his mind
He laid a plan
To make candy in the shape of a cane

The candy cane is in the shape of a "J"
The "J" represents the Lord Jesus' name
The color white stands for purity
And the red stripe is His blood shed for you and me

The candy was a shepherd's crook
That symbolized Jesus
The Good Shepherd
But they turned it upside down
So the people in the town
Would never know what it really was
